An Overview of the Pelvis: Anatomy 101 for the Chiropractic Patient

Posted on 03.25.21 |

anatomy pelvis chiropracticWhen people think about visiting a chiropractor, they usually think about a health professional who has been specifically trained to help people with issues related to the back. Even though it is true that a chiropractor can help people with a wide variety of back concerns, this actually starts with the pelvis. The pelvis is located at the base of your spine. When it comes to pelvic anatomy, there are several important points that you should keep in mind. What goes into the makeup of your pelvis? How can a chiropractor help you? Today’s article will address these questions and more.

What Are the Structures That Make Up the Pelvis?

There are several important structures that make up your pelvis. First, there are three separate bones that play a role in the overall architecture of your pelvis. These include the ilium, the ischium, and the pubis. At the beginning of your life, these bones are actually slightly separated, only connected by thin layers of cartilage. As you reach your early twenties, these bones begin to fuse together.

In addition, there are a number of large muscles that connect to your pelvis as well. These include your hamstrings, your abdominal muscles, your quadriceps, and your gluteus muscles. All of these muscles control their torso and lower extremities.

Finally, there are a number of important blood vessels and nerves that pass through your pelvis as well. These have to navigate the narrow passages between your muscles and bones before they arrive at their final destinations.

What Are the Functions of the Pelvis?

The pelvis serves a number of important functions. First, it serves as an important stabilizer, connecting your lower extremities to the spine. Second, a lot of people understand that the pelvis is actually slightly larger in women than in men. This is because, in women, the pelvis contains the uterus. The uterus has to expand during pregnancy. As a result, the pelvis has to be able to support this expansion as well.

Furthermore, the pelvis also plays an important role in digestion. The pelvis contains some of the intestines, the bladder, and reproductive organs. As a result, the pelvis is one of the most versatile parts of the body.

How Can a Chiropractor Help You Address Concerns Related to the Pelvis?

The pelvis is one of the largest sets of bones. As a result, it can experience problems from time to time. If you are experiencing lower back pain, there is a chance the problem could be related to your pelvis. In this situation, a trained chiropractor can take a closer look at your pelvis. Then, he or she may be able to use manual therapy, adjusting the bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles of your pelvis. This could be enough to address the root cause of your discomfort. Furthermore, chiropractic adjustments are safe, effective and do not have a high chance of leading to complications and side effects. As a result, chiropractic treatments can increase your overall quality of life.

Trust a Chiropractor To Help You with All Pelvis Concerns

If you are experiencing lower back pain, there is a chance that the issue could be located in your pelvis. Even though you may think you need to undergo a surgical procedure or take prescription medications, this may not necessarily be the case. Instead, you should rely on the expertise of a trained chiropractor. A chiropractor will be able to help improve the alignment of your pelvis, alleviating your symptoms without increasing the risk of side effects or complications. If you don’t know where to start, give us a call. We’re here to help!
